Taking a page from the cellphone playbook, Samsung plans to arm
some next-gen digital cameras with TV and movie playback functions. The new cameras will have 3-inch displays and will
be able to receive digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) signals. The cameras will also be able to play downloaded
videos, PMP-style, and will have a battery life of up to 3 hours. Of course, it remains to be seen whether there’s any
real demand for PMP/digicam hybrids, but early attempts at digicam mashups — which grafted MP3 players onto cameras - weren’t exactly major successes. But video might be a more popular option, given that many consumers already use their
digicams to shoot video, and given Samsung’s slim digicam market share it’s not like they have a lot to lose by
trying.
